Part-time Civilian Police Dispatcher

Job Description

Our part time civilian dispatchers perform many functions, including but not limited to:

  • Answering phones for calls for both emergency and non emergency situations
  • limited amount of written and typed paperwork
  • Dispatching Police patrols
  • Dispatching local utility companies

  • Dispatchers are limited to at most 20 hours of work a week. This position involves a work schedule of Monday through Thursday nights from 6:00 p.m. to 4:00 am. There are times that arise where the need for a dispatcher is during a different time or on a weekend. Schedules are based on a sign-up log and slots are filled by dispatchers signing up for available time on a fist come, first serve basis after the schedule is posted in the log. There are no assigned or guaranteed shifts to work.

    This position does not carry any benefits such as vacation time or health insurance. Dispatchers can opt to apply to the NYS Retirement system based on the hours they work and personal contributions.

    Qualifications

    Applicants must possess at the very minimum the following qualifications:

  • Be at least 20 years of age
  • Possess at minimum a high school diploma or GED
  • Be able to pass a background investigation
  • Have no Felony convictions
  • Minimal experience with windows based computers, use of Microsoft Office and web site navigation
  • Be able to remain calm in stressful situations and speak clearly on the telephone and police radio
  • Be able to maintain a high level of confidentiality
